Beautiful Sunday in October...

John and I spent time today enjoying the wonderful sites of San Francisco. We decided to hit a few favorite spots in the city and enjoy the wonderful weather on this fine October Sunday. Our first stop was the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina district. The Palace has just begun long awaited restoration. It seems that many noticeable problems at the site are going to be finally corrected which we are very greatful. It is an amazing site, and as an icon of SF, it deserves a little sprucing up.

The architecture of the Palace is just amazing. It was designed by Bernard Maybeck for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. It is the only building still in existence after the exposition ended.

Next stop was the Letterman Digital Arts Center built by George Lucas in the Presidio. It is just across Richardson from the Palace of Fine Arts complex. The gardens out front is a large public space designed by the renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin.

Next stop was the Crissy Field Education Center. The bench on the left was in the center. Very colorful and playful!

Where's the Golden Gate Bridge?

Next on our journey around town was back to the de Young for lunch and a little additional exploring now that it is open to the public.

We had lunch at the de Young Cafe again. The food is just amazing. Very simple but very well prepared and tasty. Unfortunately they ran out of our favorite burgers, but we decided to try something new from the menu. We were not disappointed. I got the Ginger Pork sandwich which is pulled pork, tomato ginger jam on a ciabatta roll. It was fantastic!!

John had the tuna melt. He was assured by the cashier that it was one of the best tuna melts around. He loved it!

After lunch, we strolled thru the de Young outdoor sculpture garden. The sculpture to the left looks like he has a migrane headache.

The field of apples was a playful part of the garden. They were a very fitting foil for the fall color on the maple trees. Almost made me want to go to the cider mill in Franklin, MI.

Our last stop for the day was a photo panoramamosaic exhibit at the Luv A Java coffee shop on Dolores Street in Noe Valley. We were invited to attend by a friend of ours. The artist is E. Lim. Very unique work. Check out the coffee shop and artist links below.

Oh, I could really go for another tuna melt right now :) Airport food (and hotel food for that matter) leaves a LOT to be desired.
