New California Academy of Sciences...

Rising across the plaza from the new de Young Museum in the San Francisco Golden Gate Park is yet another bold, new architectural design. This new building is going to be the new home of the California Academy of Sciences. The musuem was designed by the world famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. He has worked on many high profile projects around the world including a large number of museum. He designed the groundbreaking Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France. He is currently working an many large profile projects in the US. The list is impressive...
  • Chicago Art Institute Expansion (Chicago)
  • Columbia University Expansion, Masterplan (NYC)
  • Renovation and Expansion of the California Academy of Sciences (SF)
  • Renovation and Expansion of the Morgan Library (NYC)
  • The New York Times Building (NYC)
  • Woodruff Arts Center Expansion (Atlanta)

The design of the new California Academy of Sciences includes a undulating roof line that echos the hilly terrain of SF. This roof will be a living, green roof that incorporates a parklike aesthetic, is ecologically friendly, and offers energy efficiency.

Two new buildings, each brilliant, yet so very very different. When is this one due to be completed? I wonder how the "old wall" that they are leaving in place will affect the design. So cool.
